TALK TO US ABOUT YOUR BEGINNINGS AT LE SITE.

When I started here the office and environment were very different, and the company was smaller. I feel so grateful that I’ve been able to grow with the company and even experience being the first person in a new department. Not many people get to experience something this special.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE THE MOST IN YOUR WORK ENVIRONMENT?

The people are hands down the best part of this job. I mean, the projects are great and I love my work, but I can’t imagine what spending 4 hours in brainstorming sessions would be like if we didn’t have such a creative, intelligent and fun team to work with. Oreo helps too!

DID YOUR DEPARTMENT DEVELOP ITSELF OVER THE YEARS?

Ha! Yes. I was the first copywriter at Le Site. It was the dawn of a new era. Now we have a team and I’m so grateful for all the experience because I’ve learned so much.

CAN YOU TALK TO US ABOUT THE SYNERGY BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS AT LE SITE?

I think we’re lucky because we have a lot of great people in every department. Of course, not every department gets to work closely with one another. Copy doesn’t really get to interact with the development team, for example. But we do work closely with design, strategy and performance marketing. It’s cool. You learn so much about what other people do, and we achieve things that no department could have done on its own. We make each other stronger.

DO YOU HAVE A PROJECT THAT YOU’RE PARTICULARLY PROUD OF?

Hmmm… In a way, all my projects are my babies, and I love them all. However, the Gift Guide we created for Keurig over the holidays will always have a special place in my heart. The copy was really fun and I was proud of it, but they also used one of my illustrations in the landing page. It was a double win!

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU FEEL UNINSPIRED?

That’s when teamwork comes in handy. Usually if I’m blocked on something, I’ll grab a member from my team and drag them to a meeting room. I’ll explain what I’m working on and we’ll brainstorm and hash it out together. Sometimes just the act of explaining to another person is enough to unblock me. I encourage my team members to do the same. There’s no point in sitting at your desk and running mental laps over the same problem over and over again! Get someone else’s perspective.

CAN YOU SHARE A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A COPYWRITER WITH US?

It varies so much from day to day!

Personally, I don’t do good work if I don’t get rid of some “mental clutter” before I start. I always wake up at 6 a.m. and write for at least an hour before I come to work. That way when I sit at my desk, my head is clear and I’m warmed up.

Most of my days consist of several meetings, client presentations and brainstorming sessions. I get to step away from the desk and interact with people a lot. When this is not the case, I usually blast Songza while writing. My favourite days are the ones when we get to present our work to clients. I love the feeling! Although I could probably do without the corporate dress code.

ANY ADVICE FOR SOMEBODY WITH COPYWRITER ASPIRATIONS?

Create your own work. Don’t wait for someone else to give you permission to write. Just do it. Start a blog, or build a portfolio of fictional publicity work. No one is going to hire you based on your willingness and enthusiasm, you need to show them something concrete. I’d also say that the most beneficial thing you can do for your career is to read and write. A lot. Every day. ALWAYS! And do a lot of research. I make a point to stay informed about popular ad campaigns, best practices and new trends. Even reading about failed campaigns will teach you something valuable.

THE LAST SONG IN YOUR PLAYLIST?

Everything Ed Sheeran. Always.

YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE?

Hahaha I don’t feel guilty about any of the pleasures I have in life!

YOUR IDEAL VACATION DESTINATION?

I’m planning a trip to Machu Picchu in the next year or two. I’ve always wanted to go.

YOUR ASTROLOGICAL SIGN?

Virgo.
